Trouble: 1999-2011
Trouble Helmsley, undoubtedly the world's richest dog, has died at the age of 12 at his home in Sarasota, Florida. The cause of death was not revealed. He is survived by his caregiver, Helmsley Sandcastle Hotel General Manager Carl Lekic. When Leona Helmsley died in 2007, she left her loyal Maltese $12 million. A court later cruelly reduced that amount to $2 million. The reduced funds covered Trouble's annual expenses including $1,200 for food, $8,000 for grooming, and $100,000 for security. Trouble had gotten death threats. Lekic was paid $60,000 a year to care for the dog.
